Book Cove News: August Updates

Image
It's technically 11:13pm, July 31st as I write this. So even though I'm behind for my weekly update on upcoming events - I'm at least getting this in before the first ;-) 1.) First order of business - The Book Cove has had the wonderful opportunity to have Wayne Hicks of  eBookOnFire provide guest reviews for our site. Now, his company is attempting to take indie and self-publishing authors to a place they've never been before. A place where authors keep a majority of their profit shares and get paid weekly! With his network of manuscript proofers, copy editors, and design specialists, he's able to provide a top-notch publishing service to those authors who wish to have more control over their book-publishing needs and wants. On top of general publishing services, eBookOnFire provides promotional and social networking opportunities. And if that isn't awesome enough - coming soon is an On Demand printing service . That's right - overnight printing and shi

Book Talk: Should eBooks be valued the same as bound books?

Image
Apple recently lost a lawsuit that claimed they were teaming up with certain publishers to push the $9.99 eBook limit that is set on Amazon and sell the books instead for $12+. Apple's reasoning being that eBooks are the same as bound books and should ultimately be valued the same. I buy eBooks for 2 reasons: they're cheap and they're at my fingertips. Bound books will always be my true love. I'm one of those that enjoys the feeling and smell of a good book. To me, eBooks lack value when compared with bound books for the following reasons: 1.) You're never quite sure of the quality until you buy it (publishing, editing, formatting etc.). Granted, you can return it - but it's considered bad practice and Amazon will not allow you to return any more books after you hit a certain mark. (Rumor is 30ish - and if you read a lot , you can hit that mark pretty easily) 2.) You can't loan them as easily to anyone. Granted, some eBooks have the loan feature, bu

Review: Friday Night Alibi by Cassie Mae

Image
Friday Night Alibi by Cassie Mae Expected release date: July 29th, 2013 Random House Publishing Group - Flirt I received this book as an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review. (Author) A practical soon-to-be college freshman who seems to have everything—until a special guy shows her what she’s been missing. In the wealthy town of Sundale, Kelli Pinkins has hatched the perfect plan to capitalize on her sweet reputation. For a generous fee, she will be every trust-fund baby’s dream: a Friday-night alibi, the “girlfriend” or “BFF” that parents dream about. With college approaching in the fall, Kelli’s services are in demand more than ever, which means that her social life is nonexistent. But Kelli is A-okay with that. She’s raking in cash for school. Besides, relationships are tricky, and sometimes very messy. She’d rather be at home on Xbox LIVE, anyway. Then the unexpected happens: She meets college stud Chase Maroney. Chase isn’t like the pre

Review: Loosing It by Cora Carmack

Image
Loosing It by Cora Carmack Published October 5th, 2012 (Good Reads): Virginity. Bliss Edwards is about to graduate from college and still has hers. Sick of being the only virgin among her friends, she decides the best way to deal with the problem is to lose it as quickly and simply as possible-- a one-night stand. But her plan turns out to be anything but simple when she freaks out and leaves a gorgeous guy alone and naked in her bed with an excuse that no one with half-a-brain would ever believe. And as if that weren't embarrassing enough, when she arrives for her first class of her last college semester, she recognizes her new theatre professor. She'd left him naked in her bed about 8 hours earlier. Review:     So once again I am starting a review by saying - I was expecting so much more from Loosing It than what I got! The other reviews were raving about this deep connection and the wonderful play-out of the book. I had a hard time finding that "co

Review: Wild Blood (Vampire in the City, #2) by Donna Ansari

Image
Wild Blood (Vampire in the City, #2) Published February 6th 2012   Wild Blood is book 2 of the Vampire in the City series. Start with New Blood (Book 1) before reading this review. There will be some spoilers from New Blood . (Good Reads) Recently-turned vampire Emma Hammond is not only getting used to her undead lifestyle, but also to living with her new and unlikely roommates--her human best friend Tammy, and David, a werewolf. While the girls speculate as to possible drawbacks to having such a fuzzy tenant (shedding and marking of territory, to name a few), nothing will prepare them for the dispute that is to come between the NYC clan of vampires and an upwardly-mobile werewolf pack from the suburbs. Will Emma be able to get out of it with both her undead life, and her blossoming friendship with David, intact? And, perhaps more importantly, will she be able to choose between Alex Thompson, her sire and sometimes lover, and James, a slightly-unhinged vampire

Review: Elite (Eagle Elite) By Rachel Van Dyken

Image
Elite (Eagle Elite) By Rachel Van Dyken (Good Reads) When I won the annual Eagle Elite College Scholarship lottery, I was thrilled. After all, my grandma had just died and I wanted to take care of my aging grandpa -- he couldn't be a farmer in Wyoming forever. And graduating from Eagle Elite meant opportunity. But I wasn't counting on meeting Nixon. Nor was I counting on the rules of the Elect. 1. Do not touch The Elect. 2. Do not look at The Elect. 3. Do not speak to The Elect. And worst of all? Don't discover the secret they hide, because in the end, you may just realize... it's about you.   Review: One word: AMAZING! Rachel really nailed it with this one. Having read a few of hers now, I've grown to appreciate her as an author. Elite (Eagle Elite) is the first installment of the Elite series and I am definitely continuing on when the next book is out. Where do I even start with this?? It's a story about giving up a life you were comfort

Review: Love Me in Shadows (Behind the Mask, #1) by Tess Harper

Image
Love Me in Shadows (Behind the Mask, #1) by Tess Harper (Good Reads): It seemed so innocent at first. I don't know, maybe I should have told someone, but they were just letters. I got so I looked forward to them. I started to depend on them. Until, when he finally asked to meet me, I felt as if I already knew him. But I didn't. I wanted him. It didn't matter that I didn't know his name. It didn't matter that he always hid his face from me. He had his secrets, but then again, I had my own. But some secrets are more dangerous than others, and soon I found myself sinking into a dark world I knew nothing about. I thought I understood the consequences. I thought I could face anything with him by my side. Review: Tess Harper is a new author. I happened to stumble across this first book of hers on my eReader and it was cheap so I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, Love Me in Shadows screams amateur. The book at the time of purchase (June 11t
