Review: The Rest Falls Away (Gardella Vampire Chronicles, #1) by Colleen Gleason

The Rest Falls Away (Gardella Vampire Chronicles, #1) by Colleen Gleason

This is a five book series that takes place in the Regency era (early 1800's). Our heroine is the one and only Victoria Gardella, an heiress in the Ton society. Young, beautiful, and saucy, this is a young woman who's struggling with the idea of entering into society. In a very Jane Austen-esque fashion, she fights for what she believes in and has a sharp tongue that can put any man to shame. But when she discovers her family secret, the riches of society become the last thing on her mind. Can she hold up to her family values as well as a secret society's? Or will she choose true love?

The Rest Falls Away is a great intro book to the Gardella series. Colleen Gleason does an excellent job portraying Victoria's advancement from a girl that once only knew formal balls and husband searching, to a woman that has a secret family tradition to uphold: vampire hunting.

The writing takes you back to a Jane Austin feel. Victoria isn't afraid to call peoples' bluffs...no matter what their societal ranking....and she can hold her own when it comes to making the important decisions in a young Regency girl's life: like finding the right husband.

One of the best features of this book is the variety of characters and interplay between them. Lady Melly, Victoria's mother, is a trip! She makes me want to pull my hair out just reading her completely ignorant remarks! But she's also the butt of the joke many times which helps with the comedic relief. Aunt Eustacia is a powerhouse to be reckoned with that is both understanding of Victoria's wants but realistic when it comes to her needs. Then there's Max....oh Max...you love to hate him. He's arrogant, cocky, and self righteous - but he's the most straightforward and truthful person, which earns him the respect of many. And finally, you have Sebastian. Just the name Sebastian Vioget says "Run like hell!" Problem is, it's hard to tell if you should run away from him or into his arms....

Unfortunately (or, fortunately), Victoria has that same problem when it comes to making decisions about Sebastian. He's wrong in all the right ways and there's times when you want to scream to Victoria "WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU THINKING?!" She can certainly be infuriating with her decisions! But, let's be honest, if we were in some of her ahem - precarious- positions we'd probably not be thinking to clearly as well ;)

Overall, The Rest Falls Away wonderfully mixes excitement, romance, vampires, and Ventors (hunters) together and leaves you begging for more at the end.
