Review: New Blood (Vampire in the City, #1)

Good Reads: Emma Hammond is a normal young woman living in New York City whose life changes forever when one misstep brings her very close to death. Luckily, Alex Thompson, a handsome stranger (who also happens to be a vampire), jumps in to save her, turning Emma into a vampire. She quickly discovers the numerous advantages (no more allergies, glasses, or acne) and slight drawbacks (wanting to eat her boyfriend) of joining the ranks of the creatures of the night. But Emma soon finds out her new undead life isn't all it's cracked up to be when she gets pulled in to an age-old dispute between two feuding vampire clans.

Vampire in the City is a circa 2011-2012 trilogy that I just happened to run across this year. It started out as me looking for something random in the paranormal genre and turned into me reading all three eBooks in a days sitting! As far as I know, this series of books are the only ones by Donna Ansari, and I will say that these are pretty good quality for a new indie author.

Her writing style is very much one that I would call - relatable. The characters' dialog is something that you can really get into, and the characters themselves have qualities that all you to familiarize with them. Starting out, Emma is going through the day-to-day woes that we all understand; work, family, relationships. And then she gets thrown into this crazy underground world of vampires, witches, and other paranormal creatures. Emma handles it quite well, considering. I'm someone that looses interest in characters that throw a pity party for half of the book once they find out what they are "meant for" - so Emma's acceptance of it all was a big plus for me.

New Blood is really an introduction book for the series. It allows you to get familiarized with the characters and their world and starts to build up a little tension in the plot as it chugs along to the next book. And I mean chugs. The plot by no means goes too fast, but this also is not one of those books that you sit around wondering about everything until the last few pages to find out. It's builds adequately throughout.

Ratings:

Romance: There are relationships that develop, but there's no "steam" per se. Good characters connection
