Review: The Love Deception by Jennifer St-George

The Love Deception by Jennifer St-George

(Good Reads): When Felicity Carter wakes up naked in a strange bed, she has no idea how she got there. And no recollection of meeting the gorgeous man calmly offering her breakfast. Shocked and embarrassed, Felicity flees – hoping that their paths never cross again.

The last thing she expects is to discover that her mystery man is Damon Fullbright, partner at the law firm where Felicity has just started work – and her new boss! Damon is appalled to find the young woman he rescued has been hired to work on his team. Apart from anything else, he doesn't need the distraction.

Despite their early misconceptions, their appreciation for each other – both personally and professionally – begins to grow. But when Damon discovers what Felicity's been hiding, how will he ever trust her again?

A gripping romance that combines courtroom intrigue with a dash of Barbados, The Love Deception is the latest book from Jennifer St George.

Review:

The Love Deception was an interesting read! I went into the book thinking that it would be more-so in the fluffy Chick Lit category - talking about a one night stand turned into an awkward job encounter. But it was far from that!

I really enjoyed the storyline about a newly graduated Law student, Felicity, going about things her own way to get to the bottom of a case she had a particular personal interest in. There was a certain complexity about what she was doing along with her relationship with Damon that took this book from Chick Lit to Drama.

Speaking of Damon, I really liked him! He was tough when it came to his job, but not completely hard-headed and ignorant to the events unfolding before him. He was willing to challenge his head with his heart and go with his gut instincts - which provided an intense story. I wasn't really sure what was going on with Damon and his ex-wife until it was put out on the table towards the end. It provided for a semi-shocking, though partially expected, climax between him and Felicity.

I thought the ending sequence was kind of weird. About mid-way through the book I had a feeling that the circumstances that had lead up to that initial encounter between Damon and Felicity were different than what both Damon and Felicity had thought. I found it odd, however, that nothing was really said of it between the two. Damon and Felicity had some inside jokes about it and never really addressed it throughout the book. Then at the end there was all of these revelations by Damon about what really happened - and the author took something that could have been a couple of chapters itself and turned it into a few paragraphs of "closing" remarks and that was it! What?! I would have like a little more emotion from the characters over something like that and I got something that was like "Meh, $#!% happens."

I also would have liked to have some more information on Felicity's personal life. It was scarcely mentioned, besides the situation with her dad. Even then, there was really no dialog between her and her dad, and while I have no doubt that she loved him, I had no idea of how their relationship together was. There were no descriptions to give the reader a relationship that they could relate to. Was he overprotective? Overbearing? Have a love of fishing or sports? And what about her mom? Other family? Given the context of the book, I would have thought that family or friends would have played a prominent supporting role; yet nary a one was mentioned. I guess Felicity was just a fiercely independent gal.

Overall, I found the book exciting and enjoyable. I loved the way the characters handled their respective situations for the most part. I felt that the relationship between Damon and Felicity was well built upon, however the lack of supporting characters left me feeling like a large chunk of Felicity's life was missing.
